Position Summary

Janitorial staff are vital to maintaining a clean, sanitary and safe environment for staff and customers. Janitors follow lists of monthly, weekly, daily and as-needed tasks. Janitors keep an eye on garbage and recycling issues, notifying management of waste or non-compliance with Recology or Gus’s Community Market rules. Similarly, they pass on information about leaks, hazards and maintenance needs. 

Responsibilities

• Cleans and services restrooms.
• Sweeps, vacuums, and mops floors.
• Gathers and disposes of waste, recycling and compost.
• Makes rounds of the market and grounds at regular intervals at night; inspects doors, windows, and locks to see that they are properly and securely fastened; Locks and unlocks the building.
• Observes appearances and conditions of premises and equipment; reports needed repairs, safety hazards, or conditions requiring outside vendor services.
• Scrubs, strips, sanitize, waxes, and buffs floors.
• Maintains an inventory of cleaning and toiletry supplies.
• Washes walls, ceilings, windows and fixtures
• Replaces light bulbs and fuses.

Physical Requirement / Working Conditions

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 
• In an 8-hour workday: standing/walking 6-8 hours.
• Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
• Work requires the following motions: bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching. 
• Exposure to temperatures: <32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezing), 32-40
• degrees Fahrenheit (refrigerators), >90 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Ability to work in a wet and cold environment. 
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and
• holidays as needed.

Skill Requirements: Ability to handle heavy equipment and machinery, knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies, familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheet, integrity and ability to work independently and follow instructions.
